Only a few hours ago, Google announced a change to their algorithm, separate from their June Core Update released this week. The overall goal is to show more diversity with websites on the search results page providing more diverse and different perspective answers for the same query.

This change could affect your Google rankings positively if your targeted keyword is dominated by multiple results from the same site!

Site Diversity Change

Have you ever googled something and seen a list of results from the same site ranking in the top positions? Google picked up on this too and made this change to allow more variety in your search results! This means that you won’t see more than two listings from the same site in the top results. Although, there are some exceptions to this. There may be more than two results in some cases, which the system determines is especially relevant to do so. Google was pretty quiet on what these cases were.

Danny Sullivan, the lead spokesperson for Google Search, tweeted that the change was approximately released on the 3rd of June 2019, but let’s be clear; this is not part of their June Core Update. He clearly stated that the June Core Update and the Site Diversity Change are two different, unconnected releases.

Will it affect your rankings?

Sullivan stated that “things that ranked highly before still should” and that Google wants to avoid showing as many other pages from the same website. They will additionally treat subdomains as part of a root domain.

Remember, the best way to secure your rankings is consistently adding value for your users, adding industry-relevant content and maintaining a well optimised website, with a clean backlink profile!
